Tierberglihütte, Uri haute route Switzerland: all locals left, we stayed

Q1, 2019

We just left the Tierbergli mountain cabin in Switzerland to continue our backcountry ski touring journey with a next stop at the Trift mountain cabin. Two days ago, a snow storm forced us to interrupt our 10 day ski tour. All locals left, we stayed.

While the last storm clouds are blowing away in eastern direction late morning, we are marking our tracks in fresh powder towards the pass Tierberglücke. At the pass, a 1300 meter drop is awaiting us. Strong gusts are blowing snow from the mountains left and right from us, the Vorder and Mittler Tierberg, in this funnel. Fresh deep powder, howling and roaring wind, we are in a cloud with four to five meter sight, can’t hear or see each other nor where we are going. But we know we can’t miss. There is only one way, this long drop down, actually making orientation no problem. So we opened the ball, thirteen hundred meter knee deep fresh powder, it feels like an endless descend-party.

At the end of the descend, at lake Trift, the sky opened, offering a perfect visibility to orient and track the ascent of eleven hundred meter to a mountain pass, just before we could get a visual of the Trift mountain cabin.
Finally, at the end of the day, with only a little juice left in our legs, there is Turi. Turi, the cabin manager, was welcoming us in front of his mountain cabin, loosened our skis, gave us a warm drink and a snack. What a hospitality at the Trift mountain cabin. Certainly, one of the best mountain cabins of the Alps to go to. Any approach requires two days, assuring this site is not overcrowded. Indeed, there are some hidden gems left in the Alps and the Trift mountain cabin is one of them. Don’t spread the news…
