Skinning on our ZAG skies to summit Piz Palü

Q1, 2020

The Bernina Alps in southeast Switzerland are impressive. At least that was my experience many years ago, while crossing Piz Palü from East to West and descending via the Fortezza ridge. At that time, I forgot to make an image from the East summit to the main summit. That missing photo kept the desire in me awake to once climb Piz Palü again. In my mind the idea popped up to make this photo in winter. The white snowy view from the summit to the environment would probably impress more than in summer.

It was mid-winter 2021 that we were skinning on our ZAG skis with some friends to the summit. Each step bringing me closer to my desire, not knowing if a winter view would impress less, the same or more. I can assure you, as a photographer, the summit view is unbeatable. After I positioned my friends on the summit, six vertical panorama photos were made to stitch it afterwards in post-processing into this one horizontal single photo. This photo contains only 4 vertical photos. I use this technique often to capture as much detail as possible. Behind the main summit of Piz Palü, you can notice two climbers on the snowy crest of the southeast ridge of Piz Bernina.

The photo of the summit of Piz Palü is part of the mountain photo collection. The incentive of Moments in Mountains is to deliver quality prints of impressive mountain landscapes to use at home and at the office.
